# Supported assets

Inverters, batteries, chargers, meters, special-purpose devices, and the protocols SGM uses to talk to them.

SGM connects to on-site assets over Ethernet or RS485, using standard industrial protocols. Most assets communicate using Modbus TCP or MQTT, which means new integrations can typically be added on short notice if your specific hardware isn't listed below.

{% hint style="info" %}
If your asset is not on this list, contact Helin, integration is likely possible quickly. The system's modular architecture is built to absorb new device types without re-architecting anything else.

| **ProxyDevice** | Chains multiple devices together behind a single logical endpoint |
| **DemoDevice** | Mock device for testing and demonstration |
| **XMLDADevice** | Generic OPC XML-DA endpoint for SCADA integration |
| Generic Modbus | Custom Modbus device profiles built per integration |
| Generic MQTT | Custom MQTT device profiles built per integration |

These let Helin integrate one-off devices without writing a new driver, most "exotic" hardware ends up using one of these wrappers.

## Communication protocols

The edge nodes communicate with physical devices using multiple industry-standard protocols:

| Protocol            | What it's for                                                                                 |
| ------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Modbus TCP** | Industry default for most energy devices. Network-based. |
| **Modbus RTU**      | Serial-bus variant of Modbus, used over RS485.                                                |
| **MQTT** | Lightweight pub/sub for IoT devices (e.g. iWell MQTT). Low bandwidth, ideal for remote sites. |
| **OPC XML-DA**      | Industrial SCADA integration. Standardised real-time data access.                             |
| **SunSpec**         | Auto-discovery of SunSpec-compliant inverter registers.                                       |
| **IEC 60870-5-104** | Used for grid operator communication. |
| **EN 61850** | Real Time Interface (RTI) endpoint for utility-grade DER control. |
| **OCPP** | Standard protocol for EV charger communication. |
| Proprietary APIs | Manufacturer-specific interfaces wrapped in a standard SGM driver shape. |

## Control values per asset type

Different categories use different control conventions, but all of them go through the same `PUT /sites/{site_id}/curtail-category` endpoint:

| Category                          | Typical control value                                             |
| --------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Solar inverters**               | Percentage 0-100. `100` = full power, `0` = full curtailment.     |
| **Wind turbines** | Percentage 0-100, same scale as inverters. |
| **Battery systems** | Charge/discharge rate, or kW setpoint depending on commissioning. |
| **EV chargers** | Charging rate or session parameter. |
| **Heat pumps and flexible loads** | Operational mode or power limit. |

The exact unit (kW vs %) and the bounds (`min_value`, `max_value`) live on each device, inspect them via `GET /v1/devices/{device_id}` before sending values you haven't seen before.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://renewables.docs.helinplatform.com/sgm-product-docs/reference-docs/supported-assets.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
