# SGM hardware

Helin Gateway hardware options, the optional cabinet, and connectivity requirements.

Every SGM deployment includes a Helin Gateway, a Linux-based edge computer installed at your site. The Gateway runs the SGM control software locally, handles all communication with on-site assets, and maintains data buffering and scheduling even when the cloud connection is unavailable.

All gateways are commissioned by Helin. Hardware installation (mounting, cabling, network connection) is carried out by your electrician or ESP, using Helin's installation documentation.

## Which gateway should I choose?

|                  | Standard Gateway                 | Basic Gateway                       |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- |
| Asset count | High (20+ devices) | Low to medium (up to \~20 devices) |
| Third-party apps | Yes, Docker containers supported | Yes, limited by lower RAM/storage |
| Connectivity     | Fixed broadband required         | Optional 4G for cellular-only sites |
| I/O expansion    | Extended I/O option available    | 2x DI / 2x DO built in              |
| Budget           | Standard                         | Cost-reduced option                 |

Choose the Standard Gateway for larger sites, sites where you plan to run custom applications alongside SGM, or where high data throughput is expected. The Basic Gateway is a cost-effective choice for simpler sites where a cellular connection is preferred over fixed broadband.

## SGM Standard Gateway

The standard gateway for most deployments. Dimensioned to handle demanding sites and can host third-party Docker containers alongside the SGM software if your use case requires it.

**Key specs:**

* Linux-based ARM computer
* 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD
* 2× Gigabit Ethernet (supports network separation between asset network and WAN)
* RS485 port
* TPM 2.0 (hardware security module for secure boot and credential storage)
* Supports custom Docker containers for client applications

**Optional:** Extended I/O version with digital inputs/outputs, analogue inputs, and RTD support.

***

## SGM Basic Gateway

A cost-reduced option for simpler sites or budget-constrained projects. Suitable for sites with fewer assets and lower processing demands.

**Key specs:**

* Linux-based ARM computer
* 4 GB RAM, 32 GB SSD
* 1× Gigabit Ethernet
* RS485 port
* 2× digital input, 2× digital output
* TPM 2.0
* Supports custom Docker containers

**Optional:** 4G module for cellular connectivity where fixed broadband is unavailable.

## Cabinet with 4G and power supply

For installations where the Gateway needs to be mounted in its own enclosure, typically in outdoor or industrial environments, Helin supplies a complete cabinet ready for installation by your ESP.

**Contents:**

* Power supply, fusing, and terminal connectors
* 4G router for site connectivity
* Mounting hardware

The cabinet ships as a complete unit with all required installation documentation. Your ESP installs it on site; Helin handles remote commissioning.

## Connectivity requirements

The Gateway requires outbound internet access to connect to the Helin Platform. All communication is outbound-initiated, no inbound ports need to be opened on your firewall. See [How SGM works](/sgm-product-docs/concepts/how-sgm-works.md) for details on the zero trust networking model.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Minimum recommended uplink:** 5 Mbps symmetrical with reliable latency under 100 ms. The system operates correctly on lower-bandwidth connections, but telemetry latency and OTA update speed will be affected.
{% endhint %}

## Custom hardware

If your site has specific requirements not met by the standard or basic gateway, unusual environmental conditions, specific certifications, or integration with existing on-site compute, contact Helin to discuss options. The SGM software stack is designed to run on generic Linux hardware and can be deployed on alternative platforms on a case-by-case basis.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://renewables.docs.helinplatform.com/sgm-product-docs/reference-docs/sgm-hardware.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
